Why can killing brain cells feel good?

Newsweek published an article about why we find dangerous short-term thrills (like drug use) appealing. Why hasn’t evolution taught us to avoid such detrimental or risky behaviors? Some balance between our reflexive systems (and their immediate-gratification mentality) and our more deliberative judgements allow us to do things to our bodies that make them worse off in the long run… never really thought about it that way.
