    Mandatory life without parole

I have a secret love affair with NPR and some of their programs especially Wait, wait… Don’t Tell Me and All Things Considered. Regardless, today I listened to a very brief NPR program called Brain Science Behind Youth Life Sentence Ruling. It honestly had little, to no science in it. It simply explained that the supreme court recently ruled that mandatory life without parole for juveniles who are convicted of murder is unconstitutional. The only “science” in it was just a brief blip about how brain development isn’t complete until our 20s so children lack the maturity, self-control, and good judgment of adults. Regardless, it’s a big ruling given that it…

    Science Media

I am generally a fan of science in the news. I’m honestly a believer that some public coverage, regardless of how basic or general, is good for science because the more people hear about what’s going on, the more likely they are to care. Call it wishful thinking, or call it naivety, but it seems like we have to keep talking about science (and not only amongst ourselves) in order to spread the word. I read a book by Chris Mooney called Unscientific America that describes the divide between scientists, the media, legislators, and the American public. Though it didn’t do a very good job of providing solutions to the…

    5 baking must-haves

Okay so people always ask me what sorts of gadgets I have in my kitchen and to be honest, I don’t have many… but the few that I use I really really love. 1. A Stand-Mixer!!!! I have the Kitchen-Aid Stand Mixer which has absolutely changed my baking life. My sister Shalini bought it for me and it makes baking really fast and easy. It is a little pricey, but I promise it is worth it. It comes in really fun colors too!! (Sorry I took this photo off my Facebook and it is all blurry, but I love it anyway because it is right after I unwrapped my mixer!!!) 2. Good cake…

    Review: Flea Street (Menlo Park)

My cousin and I recently tried Flea Street in Menlo Park. I honestly had never heard of it before I found it on Yelp, but I’m glad I did. The restaurant has a total farm to table approach to food. They really take care to present seasonal, fresh, local ingredients (many of which come from the owner’s personal farm!) Our meal in the order it was presented… 1. A beet and potato amuse bouche: just totally fresh and tasty. 2. The house made bread and biscuits with butter and pink seasalt: The biscuits were amazing. I could have eaten several more of them. Not sure what the seasalt added, but…

    Brainfacts

Cool new website Brainfacts.org that is a compilation of all things neuroscience… basic info, research news, educator information, etc. I’m all for more centralized ways of getting information so I welcome the development of new things. They really should add a for students tab with a centralized hub of info regarding neuroscience graduate programs and direct comparisons between them (self-serving idea!) Researching grad schools is really exciting, but slightly daunting all at the same time. So many great schools doing amazing work… how do you go about narrowing down your choices? I feel that unlike undergrad, I have to understand and weigh the resources of the school, the structure of the…
