    Homemade Fettuccine

I recently purchased the KitchenAid Pasta Maker attachment for my stand mixer and had been dying to try it out. I used a REALLY simple pasta recipe for my test batch and it was amazing! I was shocked at how quickly fresh pasta cooks- way faster than store bought dried pasta- and how much lighter and tastier it is. I am definitely planning to experiment with more recipes so stay tuned. Ingredients: 1.5 C (12 oz) all-purpose flour (semolina is also great, but I didn’t have any at home) 3 large eggs 1 t salt 1 t olive oil sauce/veggies for serving Recipe: 1. Combine salt and flour in a…

    One-Pot Tomato Basil Couscous

It is sometimes hard to find the motivation to cook after a really long work day. I am super happy whenever I find a good recipe that can be made quickly and easily with as little clean up as possible. I know it’s easy to sacrifice flavor or healthiness when you are looking for something quick, but hopefully this recipe can be added to your arsenal of good after-work meals. I made this recipe for myself, but it could easily serve two people… so yes, I did eat if for lunch the next day.   Ingredients 1 C Israeli couscous 2 C water 1.5 C fresh spinach (kale could also…

    Blueberry Cheesecake

I absolutely love cheesecake and am positive that I can make 100 variations of it without getting bored. This is a recipe for a dense baked blueberry cheesecake that I made for a coworker’s birthday- Happy birthday Dora! The recipe is pretty simple and carries well in case you want to whip up a quick dessert to take to a party or a picnic. I carried mine for an hour on the train with no problem! Plus, the blueberries that are currently available right now at most Bay Area farmer’s markets are just too good to pass up. Ingredients: 8 graham crackers crushed 6 T unsalted butter melted 1/2 C…

    Rainbow Pride Fruit Tart

After moving to my new apartment, it was definitely time to get back on the baking bus. What better opportunity, than SF’s Pride parade! I hosted a little pre-pride get together and thought it would be awesome to have something fun & sweet for people to enjoy. This rainbow tart is incredibly easy to make, because it takes no baking at all! Plus its a fun, colorful way to enjoy some amazing seasonal fruit. I picked up the fruits I used at the SF ferry building farmers market- strawberries, apricots, pineapple, green grapes, and blue berries!                       Ingredients: 1.5 C…

    Review: Coqueta (San Francisco)

Yesterday night I had dinner at Chef Michael Chiarello’s new SF restaurant Coqueta. Coqueta, in Spanish, means to flirt, and let me tell you, any man is welcome to flirt with me if he feeds me as well as this restaurant did last night. YUM. Chef Michael is a pretty popular chef. I’ve been watching ‘Easy Entertaining’ on the Food Network for years and enjoyed seeing him compete on The Next Iron Chef. I had been reading a lot about the opening of Coqueta so I was pretty excited to try it in its first month of existence in SF. The space at Coqueta is divided into two parts at…

A Brain Area for Visual Numerals

Our article, A Brain Area for Visual Numerals, was published today in the Journal of Neuroscience. The work describes a specific brain region, in the inferior temporal gyrus, that is preferentially activated when viewing visual numerals (e.g., “4”). Strikingly, this cluster of neurons was not significantly activated when presented with similar words (e.g., “for” or “four”) or with scrambled similar looking shapes. This paper was my first real experience seeing the ups and downs of the peer-review scientific publication process; it’s been quite a journey. Excited that this work is finally out!   Journal of Neuroscience: http://www.jneurosci.org/content/33/16/6709.abstract Press: Stanford Press Release Fox News Scope Blog Business Standard

    BRAIN Initiative

This morning, I woke up to multiple texts and three emails about the new BRAIN initiative. This either means that a) I have too many friends that work in government or b) that I tend to be the only neuroscientist my friends know. Either way, it’s an exciting day! President Obama announced the BRAIN initiative, a new plan to support neuroscience research and growth in the US. “The BRAIN initiative will [give] scientists the tools they need to get a dynamic picture of the brain in action.” The Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) initiative is an aggressive plan to support and fund innovative techniques that attempt to map and characterize the…

    #overlyhonestmethods

I clearly am late to the game on this but I just discovered the hashtag #overlyhonestmethods and seriously spent 20 minutes reading through the posts, laughing out loud, and orating the best ones to the science nerds around me…. @ethomm “#overlyhonestmethods – sample stayed on ice between centrifuge runs for as long as it took me to check my social media feeds” @DrTwittenheimer “A modified protocol was implemented because a certain graduate student seems unable to follow simple instructions.#overlyhonestmethods” @eperiste “We settled on co-first authorship because it’s less bloody than dueling. #overlyhonestmethods” Story of my life or what? @MrEpid “#overlyhonestmethods We don’t know how the results were obtained. The postdoc who did…

    Gluten Free Ski Cake

Two weeks ago I went to tahoe to celebrate a good friend’s birthday. My friend is entirely gluten free so I wanted to try to make her a birthday cake that she could safely enjoy. I’ve never made a gluten free cake before and to be honest, I was a little nervous because sometimes the texture is a little chalky. I really wanted to get the cake as moist as possible, but I also wanted to make sure it set up well. I found a recipe for GF Devil’s Food cake on The Wholesome Home that I changed a little bit and have posted below. I’m sure the original recipes…
